Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has resigned effective today, Wednesday, a day after he was served a writ of summons to appear before the Senate and answer the 18 articles of impeachment against him.
Fitial is the first CNMI governor to resign.
He is also the first in the CNMI and any U.S. insular area to be impeached.
Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos will be sworn in as the new CNMI governor and Senate President Jude Hofschneider (R-Tinian) as the new lieutenant governor at 1:30pm today.
The Senate will have an emergency session with Hofschneider at 12:30pm today, before he assumes his new post.
