Sendoff for deploying Guam Guard battalion

A sendoff ceremony will be held for the soldiers of the Guam Army National Guard's 1st battalion, 294th Infantry Regiment on Feb. 22, Friday, at 2pm at the University of Guam Fieldhouse in Mangilao.

The ceremony will mark the upcoming deployment of some 600 soldiers from the battalion in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Afghanistan.

The unit received a “Notification of Sourcing” in April 2011 and was told to prepare for a possible deployment to Afghanistan in 2013. In April 2012, the battalion received an official “Alert Order” that allowed the unit to ramp up training for possible deployment. Then in August last year, the unit received its mobilization orders, formalizing the mission of the battalion.

The 1-294th Infantry Regiment is composed of soldiers from Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

The activation of the 1-294th Infantry Regiment can be considered as the largest group of reserve component troops to be mobilized and deployed from Guam.

The ceremony will be open to the public.
