The Grace Christian Academy Lady Eagles secured first place in the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization's 2013 girls volleyball regular season after capping a pair of wins in Wednesday's final round of pairings held at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The Lady Eagles won 15 out of 16 matches this season and finished three games ahead of the nine-team field in front of second-ranked Saipan International School Lady Green Geckos (12-4), MHS Lady Blue Dolphins (12-4), Mount Carmel School Lady Knights (11-5), SIS Lady White Geckos (10-6), Marianas Baptist Academy Lady Stormz (7-9), MHS Lady Yellow Dolphins (2-13), Kagman High School Lady Ayuyus' (2-13), and Saipan Southern High School Lady Manta Rays (1-15) who finally broke into the win column in last Wednesday's closing round.
GCA swiftly defeated SSHS (25-15, 25-16) and SIS Green (25-11, 25-16) to earn a first round bye in this weekend's double elimination postseason, while SSHS got a taste of victory over MHS Yellow in its second face off, 25-12, 25-21.
In addition, MCS upset MHS Blue in two hard-earned sets, 25-21, 25-18, while SIS Green downed MHS Yellow, 25-11, 25-19; and SIS White survived a three-set ordeal over MBA.
The Lady White Geckos took the opening set, 25-15, and though the Lady Stormz responded in the second exchange, 25-11, to even the count, SIS White bit down in the deciding set and took the win, 15-11.
The playoffs begin today at MHS Gym starting at 2:30pm and will continue tomorrow morning starting at 9am. Rota and Tinian high schools will be appearing in this year's competition as the respective third and fifth seeds on the bracket.
MISO organizers flipped a coin to determine the visiting teams' starting positions.
SIS Green won the tiebreaker with MHS Blue via total point differential, 116-106. MHS Yellow defeated KHS via forfeit early on in the season (Jan. 8) and was thus issued the nod in the rankings as the pair's second matchup (Jan. 29) was cancelled and never made up.
