Sweeps dominate Day 2 of Sun Palace tourney

(Roselyn B. Monroyo) Majority of the matches in Day 2 of the Sun Palace Hotel Singles and Doubles Badminton Competition 2013 last Sunday at the TSL Sports Complex were decided after only two games.

Mario Diola and Joel Ortega set the tone for the day after sweeping their foes in one of the first two matches scheduled last weekend. The duo made short work of Jordan Pangelinan and J.P. Nopia, 21-11, 21-19, in the Pool B match in the men's doubles B at 5pm. Also set at the same time was the women's doubles C tiff between Havika Farro and Mykkie Caracut and Sally and Tina Lee with the first pair prevailing, 21-16, 18-21, 21-17.

In the second set of matches, all duels at Courts 1, 2, and 3 were done after only two games. In the men's doubles B, Edwin Maratas and Saul Gargallos swept Jorge Olanda and Narlou Achas, 21-17, 21-11; Saliya Rajapaksh and Oh Im Bog downed Ariel Mariano and Celso Agui in the men's doubles A, 21-17, 21-17; and Mark Apolinar topped Jeremy Montenejo in the men's singles C, 21-12, 21-12.

Six other players won their respective singles matches. In the men's singles C, Panapa Peteru prevailed over Mr. Park, 21-18, 21-19; Rommel Bartolome edged Kevin Park, 21-19, 20-21, 21-8; and Jeff Riman defeated Marvirick Joyce, 21-18, 21-10. In the men's singles B, Joseph Santos crushed Nopia, 21-16, 21-11, while Ezekiel Macario triumphed over Alvin Alvarez, 21-10, 21-15.

In the women's singles, Merlie Tolentino beat Elna Curate in the B class, 21-14, 21-13; Lani Bartolome survived Jen Savellano in A class, 21-20, 20-21, 21-19; and Jen Cardinio and Janelle Pangelinan won over Cristy Villaflor, 18-21, 21-19, 21-14, and Marlyn Montano, 21-16, 21-11, respectively in B class.

Still in the women's competition, doubles A teammates Alma Ortega and Hannah Choi swept the mother-and-daughter duo of Loida and Angie Ito, 21-16, 21-5, while Savellano and Chris Obaldo had a similar two-game win versus Tolentino and Villaflor in the D division, 21-20, 21-17. Dinae and Jenny Francisco recorded the third victory via sweep in the women's doubles after topping Roxe Lazaro and Lani Santos in C class, 21-20, 21-18.
