Angie's Boys, Rebels start finals series

Angie's Boys' Eugene Manglona, left, converts from the post against Docomo Pacific during their playoff game in the Blue Haus caging last March 7 at the Garapan Basketball Court. (Walter J. Sutherland) Top ranked Angie's Boys and the Refaluwasch Rebels started their best-of-three championship series in the 3rd Blue Haus Invitational Basketball League last Monday before rain abruptly put a stop to their game at the Garapan Basketball Court.

At the time, Angie's Boys held a 47-42 lead with six minutes and change left in regulation.

The two teams reconvened at the Garapan court last night to finish up Game 1 and Game 2 was also scheduled that evening.

Leading into the three-game final series, the two title contenders outlasted an 18-team field divided among three pools.

Angie's Boys knocked out Docomo Pacific, 89-66, last Thursday, while the R-Rebels issued the latter its first loss, 89-66, in a previous postseason match held last Feb. 24.

In last Thursday's playoffs, Angie's Boys worked out a slim 18-15 advantage in the first quarter and the match remained very close through midpoint as the teams became tangled in a 39-all deadlock.

Angie's Boys' Ralph Francisco and Docomo's Ichitaro Faisao led their squad in the first two exchanges with 14 and 15 points, respectively.

Angie's Boys then stepped on the gas after the break and motored ahead, 71-53, in the third quarter before coasting to the easy win.

Angelo Fernando fronted the big push with 14 points.

He finished with 20 markers though teammates Eugene Manglona and Francisco led the team in scoring with 24 and 23 points. Faisao led Docomo with 21.

In the previous knockout match the R-Rebels stormed out to a 28-11 lead in the first period and maintained a healthy 48-28 halftime margin.

Shane Deleon Guerrero carried the squad with a baker's dozen at the start and teammate Frank Mettao and Roy Norita matched his effort in the second quarter.

Docomo jumped on its horse after intermission and battled all the way back to within a couple of possessions, 55-59, heading into the last 10 minutes, but R-Rebels quickly regrouped and coasted to a sound win.

Sheen Metran led Docomo's third quarter charge with 12 points and added 8 more during crunch time for a team-high total of 25, but did not receive enough added support.

R-Rebels' Deleon Guerrero led all scorers with 29 points.

Angie's Boys 89 - Manglona 24, Francisco 23, Fernando 20, Maranan 9, Dela Cruz 4, Caro 4, Yap 3, Lee 2.

Docomo Pacific 66 - Faisao 21, Sison 13, Sacramento 11, Metran 7, Montes 6, Hernandez 4, McCale 2, Sancianco 2.

Scoring by quarters: 18-15, 39-39, 71-53, 89-66.
