San Roque resident Lito Asuncion and Saipan Seniors Advisory Council president Maria T. Salinas outshone their opponents to win the Man'amko Ground Golf Tournament held at the Aging Center last Wednesday.
Asuncion, who also won this year's pool tournament, was on fire after beating five congregates who are considered “experienced veterans” in the game under the male division, namely Pedro Dela Cruz, Jose I. Torres, Leonides Marinas, Kimo Jordan, and Orlando Gondayo.
With his wife Jacoba by his side, Asuncion became the first male client to score a hole in one as well, said Aging coordinator Walter Manglona.
“His swing was masterful and his composure was of that of a veteran golfer. He may be a rookie but he didn't show it. He was very impressive,” Manglona said about Asuncion.
Meanwhile, Salinas edged out her fellow competitors, particularly her closest rival Meryalen Conrad, by a huge margin. Manglona described her as “amazing” during the game.
“She played better than most of the men. For the past few weeks, Maria Salinas has shown that she means business when she steps out on that field,” he added.
According to Manglona, the man'amko continue to show their competitive spirit in playing the various games that they conduct at the center.
He said the island's elderly are looking forward to the month of May when they celebrate “Older Americans Month.”
Hopefully, Manglona said, this year's celebration would allow the Saipan seniors to play against their counterparts from Tinian and Rota for an inter-island ground golf game, which is one of the biggest events they are eyeing for the month-long celebration.
“We are still planning the events for May so things are not yet finalized,” he said.
The theme for the celebration is “Unleash the Power of Age” and Manglona said the man'amko at the center are getting ready to do just that.
“Our main goal is to continue to promote goodwill amongst our clients and encourage them to stay active and healthy,” added Manglona.
