Women's doubles C finals set

The pairs of Dianne Francisco and Jenny Lee and Lani Santos and Roxie Lazaro arranged their title showdown in the women's doubles C division in the Sun Palace Hotel Singles and Doubles Badminton Competition 2013 after prevailing in separate semis matches last weekend at the TSL Sports Complex.

Francisco and Lee notched the first finals berth after eliminating Sally In and Tina Lee in the semifinal match set on Court 2, 21-13, 21-17. Lazaro and Santos played on the same court after the first semis match and needed three games to clinch the second and last finals berth against Mykki Caracut and Havika Farro. Lazaro and Santos dropped the opening game, 19-21, but recovered in the last two, 21-13, 21-19, to steal the win.

The women's doubles C finals will be played this weekend, along with the semis matches in other divisions.

Three of the four finalists in the women's doubles C also made it to the singles semifinals with Francisco, Santos, and Lazaro advancing and joining Farro to the next round. Francisco and Santos will battle in the first semis game, while Farro will take on Lazaro in the other Final Four pairing.

In the women's singles B, youth players Jen Savellano and Cris Obaldo will collide in the second semis pairing, while newcomer Jen Cardinio will challenge Janelle Pangelinan in the other Final Four duel.

Savellano also marched into the semis of the women's singles A and will be up against perennial champion and tournament favorite Hannah Choi. Angie Ito, also one of the top contenders in her division, will face Lani Bartolome in the second semis pairing.

In the women's doubles B, three teams had already secured semis tickets, but two will be battling for the last spot to the next round. Marlyn Montano and Cheng Saturno topped the field to gain the first semis seat, while Cardinio and Pangelinan and Annette Ta and Windy Fernandez secured the next two. Savellano and Obaldo will meet Alma Ortega and Francisco in a tiebreak match for the fourth and last Final Four berth.

Meanwhile, the semis cast for the men's doubles B was completed last week. Edwin Maratas and Alvin Alvarez took the first semis spot and will square off against Chris Hilario and Brendon Talania. The other semis pairing will feature the team of Saliya Rajapakshe and Oh In Bog against the duo of Mario Diola and Joel Ortega.
