A second city in Russia has begun charter flights to Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands, another sign of growing demand for this western Pacific beach resort destination.
Charter flight company Aviacharter DV launched weekly direct flights from Khabarovsk, Russia on March 31, 2013, a few short months after beginning direct flights from Vladivostok in far east Russia.
“Russian visitors are an important segment of our tourism market in the Northern Marianas, and we warmly welcome the new charter flights launched by Aviacharter DV,” said Marianas Visitors Authority marketing manager Bruce Bateman. “Russians love the natural beauty and clean, peaceful environment of our islands, and they stay longer, spend more, and experience more of island life than visitors from most other countries.”
So far this fiscal year, Russian visitor arrivals are up 59 percent to 3,898 visitors compared to the same period last year. The flights from Khabarovsk will provide another 144 available air seats weekly.
A number of Russian media reps and travel agents arrived on the inaugural flight and conducted a familiarization tour of the destination earlier this month. Representatives of regional daily newspaper Tihookeanskaya Zvezda, regional news agency AmurPress, TV channel Ren-TV, and city-portal www.MoiGorod.Ru spent the week conducting inspections of island hotels and taking in numerous tourist attractions.
Activities included visiting Managaha, a submarine tour, the Las Vegas-style SandCastle cocktail show, DFS Galleria, buggy riding with Marianas Trekking, sunset dinner cruise, Mandi Asian spa, dinner at Shenanigan’s, Saipan World Resort water park, a Chamolinian dinner show, and apartment and condo inspections.
