Bordallo wants comment period for rule extended

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) recently joined Rep. Sam Farr, Rep. Jared Huffman and Rep. Lois Capps in urging the National Marine Fisheries Service to extend the public comment period on a proposed rule to implement provisions of the Shark Conservation Act of 2010.

The Members expressed their concern that the preemption provision in the NMFS’ draft rule would take away a much-needed tool that states and territories use to protect and recover dwindling shark populations. To ensure all stakeholders are provided with an ample opportunity to review and comment on the proposed rule, and to ensure that shark conservation efforts are implemented fairly, they requested to extend the comment period by a full 60 days to Aug. 16, 2013.
