Some 27 early-risers took part in the 12th Annual Foundation Walk organized by the Marianas Walking Association last Saturday.
The event started bright and early at 6am with participants walking the 5-kilometer route from the Carolinian Utt in Garapan to the Japanese Tank memorial on Quartermaster Road.
MWA board director Hiroko Tajima said they didn’t get the turnout they expected because of the heavy downpour early Saturday morning.
The 27 participants who did brave the rain and slick Saipan Beach Pathway, however, had a great experience taking part in the early morning event that celebrated MWA’s 12th anniversary.
Tajima said the Saipan Walking Association, Inc. was renamed MWA in Sept. 15, 2008 and the group celebrated that anniversary on Aug. 24.
The Marianas Visitors Authority, Coca-Cola, KKMP, Team PDI, Joanna’s Transportation Service, and Island Apparel were the main sponsors of the MWA’s 12th Annual Foundation Walk.
Event T-shirts were sold for $10 apiece and Joanna’s Transportation Service donated a beautiful 12th anniversary cake.
MWA will have three more events for 2013: the Aqua Walk in September, the Turkey Walk in November, and the Christmas Walk in December. It also held the SOPHIA Walk in May.
Tajima is urging the public to strive to be healthy this year by joining MWA’s free walking events. She noted that as a nonprofit organization, MWA needs the support of the community to carry out their activities every year.
