Defending champions Sonics and Mariana Resort/Proa recorded contrasting victories in the U19 division games in the 22nd Annual Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League last week at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Mariana Resort/Proa outclassed the Kagman Cougars in the first game, 57-50, while the Sonics routed the Rebelholics in the second match of Week 4 of the youth league. The Mariana Resort/Proa notched its second straight win after a 0-2 start, while Kagman absorbed its first loss in four games to drop to second place and tie the Sonics. Rebelholics got its fourth defeat in as many matches.
The Kagman Cougars-Mariana Resort/Proa ended in a deadlock at halftime, 29-29, before the former went cold in the third period, allowing the latter to take the driver’s seat. Kagman scored only 2 points in the third canto, while Proa made 12 for a 41-31 advantage.
Kagman, behind the 3-point shooting of John Samuel Darag and John Santos, tried to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter, but fell short, as Proa’s Dave Smith and Dixon Kwon countered with timely baskets to keep the lead and the win.
Kwon paced Proa with his 22 points, while Smith chipped in 13. John Benavente also posted twin digits with his 10 markers. Kagman drew 17 and 16 points from John Santos and Darag, respectively.
In the second game, the Sonics finished off Rebelholics right in the first quarter, building a big 26-2 advantage. Forward Bryle Alegre dominated the opening canto, scoring 12 of his 16 points, while Michael Cenir notched the lone basket for Rebelholics in the first frame.
The Rebelholics continued to score in single digits in the next two quarters, as the Sonics padded their lead en route to the 39-point winning margin.
Jaymark De Guzman, who had only 4 points in the first canto, picked up where Alegre left off and went on to top-score for the Sonics with his 22 points. Jack Aranda contributed 13 and the Sonics got at least 4 points apiece from four other players. Michael Cenir led the Rebelholics with his 9 points.
