Paul Bea beat top-ranked Wellington Ang in the finals twice to rule Class B of the 2013 Philippine Bowling Association Budweiser Classified Tournament held early this month at the Saipan Bowling Center.
Bea edged Ang in Game 1 of the finals, 163-157, and also took Game 2, 158-140, to complete the come-from-behind victory and join Rusty Musca (Class A) and Ariel Dumapit (Class B) in this season’s champions circle.
Ang and Bea dueled for the Class C championships after surviving the qualifying games. Ang recorded 1,009 pinfalls in the six-game qualifying roll-offs to top the 13-player elimination and bag the automatic first finals berth. The No. 1 qualifier was the only bowler to knock down at least 1,000 pins, averaging 168.17 per game and posting his best scores in Games 4 and 5 (179s). Ang’s other scores were 160, 177, 145, and 179.
Bea was ranked second after the qualifying tournament to advance to the stepladder finals where he faced third finisher Edgar Abalos. Bea was the lone bowler in his group to earn 200-plus pinfalls, as he tallied 220 in Game 2. However, he logged 116s twice (Games 4 and 6) and adding his 162, 168, and 182, he collected only 963 pinfalls and averaged 160.50. Abalos had his best showing in Game 2 (182) and got 944 pinfalls after scoring 120, 156, 152, 170, and 159 in the five other games.
Abalos and Bea then battled for the second and last finals berth with the latter dominating the former, 192-145. Bea kept his winning ways against the favored Ang, who had a twice-to-beat advantage in the championships for topping the qualifier.
Bea, Ang, and Abalos all received trophies and cash prizes during the awards ceremony for the Budweiser-sponsored competition last Aug. 17 at SBC.
Meanwhile, other participants in the Class C tournaments were Simeon Eparwa (940), Tony Yarobwemal (903), Gigi Zapanta (899), Ryan Batac (893), Marie Candado (892), Randy Abreu (863), Lala Taitano (853), Joey Ranjo (844), and Jerry Kaneshi (681).
