I see our illustrious House floor leader Ralph Demapan has proposed a 100-percent tax increase on a pack of cigarettes from $2 to $4. Is this not a form of discrimination? I once read a letter to the editor that suggested a tax on sugar products. What happened to that idea, Mr. Demapan?
Here is my proposal: How about a tax on betel nut? I truly believe there are more betel nut chewers than smokers on our island. What a source of revenue! Also, what is more disgusting to our tourists as they walk along the sidewalks: cigarette butts or puddles of red spit and betel nut remains?
Citizens of Saipan, if you agree with this idea, please follow the red spit road up Capital Hill and let your voice be heard.
