A man who drove an allegedly stolen Toyota Sienna van engaged several police vehicles in a car chase on Beach Road before hitting a police vehicle near Hard Rock Café in Garapan yesterday morning.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Sgt. Thomas Blas Jr. said the driver of the van suffered minor injuries and was arrested.
DPS Commissioner James Deleon Guerrero told Saipan Tribune that the van was indeed reported stolen.
Deleon Guerrero said a traffic police officer was along Monsignor Guerrero Road in As Terlaje sometime early yesterday morning when he spotted the stolen van.
The officer turned around and followed the van. The driver was not driving fast at the time, but he sped off upon reaching the As Lito Road.
The commissioner said a pursuit ensued on Beach Road until the van rammed into a police vehicle near Hard Rock Café. The patrol car was among the police cars involved in the chase.
After hitting the police car, the suspect turned the van around to try to flee again, but was unable to do so, Deleon Guerrero said.
Deleon Guerrero said the officer was not injured.
He has no information yet as to how many police cars were involved in the chase.
The commissioner and Blas said they have no information yet on who owns the van and whether the driver was intoxicated or not.
DPS is expected to release more details today, Tuesday.
