DFS Galleria is on board the 7th Annual Hell of the Marianas Century Cycle Race.
DFS Saipan president Marian Aldan-Pierce led a donation turnover ceremony last Friday at the DFS office in Garapan, affirming the company’s title sponsorship for the Dec. 7 event. Aldan, together with other DFS officials, turned over the $5,000 ceremonial check to race director Kanae Quinn and Vince Seman of the organizing Northern Mariana Islands Cycling Federation.
“We are humbled by DFS’ support to the Hell of Marianas event. Getting help from private companies like DFS will help us continue hosting this most exciting cycling race in the CNMI,” said Seman, whose group took over the organizing chores from Pacific Islands Club.
Last year, PIC announced it will no longer spearhead the staging of the 100-kilometer race around the island, leaving both local and off-island bikers guessing if the annual event will be shelved for the 2013 season.
However, NMICF, Quinn, and main sponsor Marianas Visitors Authority stepped up, ensuring that Hell of Marianas will still hit the road this year.
“Through the help of MVA and other sponsors, we will be able to continue the legacy of Hell of Marianas founder Kieran Daly. We also hope to bring a better and bigger race this year,” Seman said.
Quinn echoed Seman’s sentiments, saying more companies are coming in to ensure that the race will be a successful one.
“What a generous sponsorship from DFS. Others are also coming in and we’re very thankful that they are supporting this great event,” Quinn said.
For her part, Aldan, who is also a biker, said supporting a sports event like the Hell of Marianas shows DFS commitment to promoting active and healthy lifestyle among its employees
“We actually want to encourage our employees to be active and join sports. An active and healthy employee always comes to work,” said Aldan-Pierce, whose company is also sponsoring running, golf, and tennis tournaments.
“Now, we made a transition to biking because it is for any age group. The DFS president who is based in Hawaii is also an avid biker. We have a very beautiful island and one of the best ways to enjoy it is to hop on your bike,” Aldan-Pierce said.
For non-bikers, the DFS Saipan president said they can still support the Hell of Marianas. She said motorists must give way to bikers and not drive close to them. This will ensure the safety of both the bikers and motorists not only during the Hell Marianas, but every day. Aldan-Pierce also called on residents who own dogs, which she said should be put on a leash or be kept inside their property.
“When we go biking, some dogs chase us,” she said.
Meanwhile, DFS is the second title sponsor of the Hell of Marianas. Pacific Trading, Co. is the other one, while platinum sponsors include PIC, Mariana Resort & Spa, IT&E, Triple J Rental/Wholesale. The December event has also drawn the support of D&Q Saipan, Kanoa Resort, Fiesta Resort & Spa, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Sorensen Media Group Power 99, Gold’s Gym, Star Sands Plaza, Seafix Inc., Saipan Submarine, Restaurant 360, and Saipan Shipping Co.
