The Ol’Aces ended DYS’ winning run in the U15 division of the 22nd Annual Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League after notching a 39-33 victory last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
With the Ol’Aces beating DYS and KFC/Taco earlier routing the DA Projects in the first game last weekend, there is now a three-way tie for the lead in the six-team field. The Ol’Aces, DYS, and KFC/Taco Bell hold similar 3-1 records for the top spot and are followed by the Rollers (2-2), Rebelholics (1-3) and the winless DA Projects (0-4).
The Ol’Aces stunned the erstwhile leader after limiting DYS to single digits in scoring in the last three quarters. Before its lethargic offense in the last three periods, DYS managed to take a 13-8 lead in the first eight minutes of play. John Samuel Darag led DYS’ good start, scoring 7 points before he was held to one field goal each in the last three frames.
DYS hung on to a shaky 1-point lead at halftime, 20-19, but eventually lost the upper hand when the Ol’Aces logged their second double-digit output in the third. The Ol’Aces had 10 markers in the second and third periods with four players at least contributing two field goals apiece to put their team on top, 30-26.
The Ol’Aces kept the lead in the fourth, as DYS only traded shots with them. Dustin Sablan and Dachelbai Cruz top-scored for the Ol’Aces with heir 11 points each, while Darag had 15 for DYS.
KFC 47, DA Projects 23
KFC recovered from its sorry loss to DYS in Week 3 after crushing DA Projects in the first game.
KFC outgunned DA Projects right in the first half, as the latter only made three field goals in the opening 16 minutes of the match. Jun Alipio and Art Borromeo scored 4 points apiece in the first period to lift KFC to a 10-4 lead, and the team made its last three baskets from the 3-point area to start a breakaway, 21-6.
With DA Projects lacking manpower as only seven players showed up for the match, there was no way it could overall KFC’s lead in the second half.
Borromeo led KFC with his 10 points and his seven other teammates made it to the scoreboard. Only four players contributed in DA Project’s cause.
Meanwhile, the Rollers was awarded a win via forfeiture as the Rebelholics did not have enough players for the second game last Saturday.
