The Giants cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Tigers in the 2nd Annual DYS/Triple A Youth Baseball League last Saturday at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.
The Giants now have a 5-2 record for solo second place behind co-leaders Padres and Braves, who hold similar 6-1 cards. Completing the standings are the Yankees (3-4), the Tigers (2-5), Dodgers (1-5), and the Cardinals (0-5).
After escaping with an 8-7 win over the Tigers in the first round, the Giants this time earned a convincing victory, holding the former to three hits and one run.
Jessie Brel started out on the mound for the Giants and gave up only one hit in 2.1 innings. He got three strikeouts and stranded three runners. With Brel pitching, the best that the Tigers could do was reach second base.
Franklin Lizama came in for Brel at the bottom of the third and began his duty with a strikeout before giving up two hits. Jake Flores and Ricardo Dela Cruz singled for the Tigers and the former went on to out his team on the board with a run off an error from catcher K.J. Deleon Guerrero. Lizama got his second strikeout to end the inning and he continued to pitch early in the fifth, this time giving up no hits and walking three to preserve the Tigers 3-1 lead. The Tigers failed to gain another run after scoring in the third, as the Giants’ defense was in place.
In contrast, the Tigers fumbled on defense several times, resulting to three early runs for the Giants at the top of the first inning. The Giants got three more runs off the Tigers’ miscues in the sixth and seventh inning, while the latter’s miseries continued, as Franco Nakamura closed the game for the Giants and recorded three strikeouts in 2.3 innings.
Nakamura, who also went 3-for-4 at bat and scored one run, got the two early strikeouts on Jose Lizama and Cedric Ada at the bottom of the seventh inning and the match quickly ended as T.J. Dela Cruz caught a fly ball from third batter Jake Flores.
