KFC/Taco Bell and the Ol’Aces were awarded the automatic semis tickets in the U15 division of the 22nd Annual Saipan Rotary Club Youth Basketball League after prevailing in a tiebreak.
The Ol’Aces, KFC/Taco Bell, and Division of Youth Services finished the round-robin regular season with identical 4-1 records to force a three-team logjam for the top spot in the six-team field. To break the standoff and determine the winner of the outright semis slots, league organizers had to tally the scores of the three even teams in the regular season. KFC/Taco Bell went on to win the tiebreak and take the No. 1 spot and first semis seat, as it defeated the Ol’Aces by 29 points, 66-35 and lost to DYS by only a deuce, 36-38. The Ol’Aces won over DYS, 39-33, to notch the second and last semis ticket.
With DYS falling to the No. 3 spot, it has to play in the first round of the playoffs this Saturday against the last place DA Projects (0-5). The DYS-DA Projects tiff is set for 1pm with the winner challenging the Ol’Aces in the first semis match on Monday (Sept. 16) at 4pm. In the second game this Saturday at 2pm, the fourth-ranked Rollers (2-3) will face fifth placer Rebelholics (1-4) with the victor colliding against KFC/Taco Bell on Monday at 5pm.
Meanwhile, two make-up games will be played in the U19 division today. At 5:30pm, Proa/Mariana Resort suits up against the Rollers while the defending champions Sonics square off against the Kagman Cougars at 6:30pm.
The Sonics hold a 5-1 record in the eight-team field behind the undefeated S.J. Ol’Aces, who has a 6-0 slate and will play its last game this Friday against the Rebelholic (1-5). Kagman and Proa are tied for third with similar 4-2 slates, while the Rollers own a 2-4 mark. Completing the field are the Ol’Aces (1-4) and the COPSSA Warriors (0-5).
The U19 division is expected to wrap up the regular season this weekend and the playoff round will start on Monday.
