Gregorio M. Sablan pulled off a one-stroke win in the Saipan Golfers Association August Ace Tournament held last month at the Marianas Country Club.
The 22-handicapper Sablan shot a 91 at the Marpi course on Aug. 18, built off his 46 on front nine and 45 on the back. Deducting his handicap score, he ended up with a net 69, ahead by only one shot against Frances M. Sablan.
The eventual runner-up fired a 52 and 49 on the front and back nines, respectively, for a gross 101 and net 70. Sablan holds a 31 handicap. Joining Gregorio and Frances Sablan in the Top 3 was Mariano Fajardo, who posted a net 72. The 21-handicapper Fajardo carded a 46 in the first nine holes and 47 in the last nine for a gross 93.
Besides the Top 3 in the August Ace competition, 21 SGA members also slugged it out in the closest to the pin and longest drive contests. Frances Sablan prevailed in the longest drive competition in hole No. 2, while Greg Sablan won in hole No. 11. In the closest to the pin races, Nick Sablan topped hole No. 6, while Ben Aldan, Jung Eaun Teack, and Joe Sablan won in the other three holes.
Meanwhile, SGA will hold its September Ace of the Month this Sunday on the west course of the Laolao Bay Golf & Resort. Showtime is at 9am, while tee off is at 10am.
