With teams still on the fence whether or not to join the competition, the United Filipino Organization has postponed the opening of its 2013 UFO Basketball League to Sept. 29.
Coordinator Abner Venus, of the Basketball Association of the Northern Mariana Islands, said the one-week postponement would give interested teams more time to make up their minds.
He said so far four teams have signed up to play in the masters and eight in the open division. Meanwhile, not much teams have shown interest in the 20-and-under and 15-and-under age groups. Venus said this is probably because the Saipan Rotary Youth Basketball League is still ongoing.
The four teams that will see action in the 40-and-over division is led by defending champion Armatech, Laguna, MAFEA, and Masters Degree.
Mobil, Proa, KB Market, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Kanoa Resort, Toka Degree, and Hoopaholics, meanwhile, make up the open division. Venus said aside from the eight, three more teams are looking to join the age group.
Venus said the league would have its final organizational meeting tomorrow beginning 6pm at the conference room of the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Despite the postponement, the 2013 United Filipino Organization Basketball League will still kick off at the TSL Sports Complex’s Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
Before the actual games start, the opening ceremony will promptly begin at 1pm on that day. Playing dates for the league will be Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, if necessary. First game is at 6:30pm and second game is at 8pm.
