Over 600 people have signed up for the 28th Annual International Coastal Cleanup as of yesterday scheduled for Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21, on Saipan.
According to Coastal Resources Management ICC coordinator Nicole Schafer a total of 23 organizations have officially signed up for this week’s Saipan beach cleanups and more are still signing up.
“Cleanups are a great way to raise awareness and bring to the forefront our fight for trash-free seas,” said Schafer.
Last year the CNMI had a total of 28 organizations and 2,035 volunteers that collected over 10,000 lbs of trash.
According to the ICC website more than 500,000 volunteers picked up 10 million lbs of trash around the globe during the 2012 ICC.
The organizations and groups that have so far signed up for Saipan’s ICC include: GHD Inc., Saipan International School, U.S. Coast Guard, D&Q Saipan and Cosmos Distributing, Saipan Community School, Pacific Oriental, Inc. dba POI Aviation, Mount Carmel School Sophomore, Lions Club International Region 2 District 204, Tan Holdings Adopt-A-Pavilion Team, Brabu Pharmacy and Wellness Center, Saipan Hash House Harriers, Pacific Islands Club Saipan, Dental Care Saipan, Our LaoLao, Saipan Southern High School, Environmental Clubs, Youth Environmental Advocates, Rep. Felicidad T. Ogumoro, T.A.S.A. Inc., Commonwealth Utilities Corporation, Families of 13 Fishermen, Environmental and Natural Resources Organization, Department of Public Lands, Division of Environmental Quality and the Coastal Resources Management
CRM encourages all participating groups to cut down on waste by bringing their own reused plastic bags and working gloves for the event. However, CRM will be supplying trash bags and rubber gloves for those who need it.
Tinian hosted their coastal cleanup yesterday and over 225 people participated. Rota is scheduled to have their cleanup tomorrow.
