Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization will kick off the 2013-2014 season with the staging of two leagues.
First up will be the 2013-2014 MISO Boys Volleyball League that will open on Sept. 30 at the Marianas High School Gymnasium. The volleyball league will feature seven teams—defending champion Saipan International School, Grace Christian Academy, Marianas Baptists Academy, Saipan Southern High School, Kagman High School, Mt. Carmel School, and MHS.
Participating squads will be playing in a double-round robin regular season every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. The competition will then culminate with a double-elimination playoffs in November with Tinian and Rota invited to join the event.
Four games are scheduled every playing day and set to compete in the opening are GCA against Southern on the north court at 4:30pm and SIS and MBA on the southern end. At 5:30pm, Mt. Carmel will take on MHS on the north court, while GCA will play its second game of the day on the southern side against Kagman.
The following day, MISO will start the girls basketball league, which will have two divisions, the varsity and junior varsity. Defending champion MHS leads this season’s participants and will be joined by Mt. Carmel, Kagman, and Southern.
According to MISO coordinator Nick Gross, the JV games will be played first at 4:30pm, followed by the varsity matches 10 minutes after the opening game concludes. Matches in the JV division will be played in four 10-minute quarters and the league will implement a running time (except in the last two minutes of each frame) and a 30-second shot clock.
The standard 24-second shot clock and stop clock will be in effect in the varsity games. However, a “mercy rule” will be in place once the leading team is ahead by at least 30 points after the first half and the opposing squads will play in running time in the second half. If the margin is10 points or below, the normal clock setup will be used in the second half.
The MHS Lady Dolphins and MCS Lady Knights are slated to collide in the opener of the MISO girls caging next month, while the SSHS Lady Rays and Kagman Lady Ayuyus will debut on Oct. 3. Games will be played every Tuesday and Thursday, but MISO also set two matches for Fridays (Oct. 11 and Oct. 18).
A double-elimination tournament will also cap the MISO girls caging season with Tinian and Rota invited, too, to participate in the Nov. 15 and 16 competition.
