The CNMI’s state library recently welcomed the addition of Lauren Bartell as intern librarian.
She said she is happy to be helping out at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, which she describes as the best library in Micronesia.
Even as more people do their research using the Internet, Bartell said the importance of brick and mortar libraries like JKPL remain. Digital books, especially for young readers, could not replace the feel of paper ones, she added.
However, Bartell said JKPL’s acquisition of digital and electronic titles would help supplement its over 64,000 items.
Bartell hails from Detroit, Michigan and holds a master’s degree in library information services. She used to be the academic librarian of the Davenport University in Livonia, Michigan.
She says she moved to Saipan six months ago to be with her husband, who works for a federal agency.
For more information about the CNMI state library, visit JKPL during its regular hours, Tuesday to Friday, from 10am to 6pm, and Saturday from 9am to 4pm. The library is closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. Call the library at 235-7316 or 7322 or visit its website, www.cnmilibrary.com.
