Spring season champion Wild Bill’s was among the winners in the opening week of the fall season of the M-League, as it edged Paire FC, 2-1, in A Division 1 game last Sunday at the Oleai Sports Complex Field.
Youth player Tanapon Unsa made the twin goals for Wild Bill’s, while Trey Dunn scored the lone goal for Paire. Dunn was the first one to light up the board, as he attacked near the right corner of the penalty area in the 30th minute and Wild Bill’s Glenn Smith failed to stop him, as the ball crossed to the left side of the goal.
Paire kept the shaky 1-0 lead past the halfway mark of the second and final half before Unsa eluded his defenders and tied the match with a goal in the 70th. Then 12 minutes later, Unsa found the back of the net anew to give Wild Bill’s a good start in the spring season.
Tan Holdings 4, Inter Godfather’s 3
The first game last Sunday was also a close match with Tan Holdings slipping past Inter Godfather’s.
Zheng Xu scored the winning goal for Tan Holdings about two minutes before the match ended, while Joe Miller drilled the three other goals to help his team secure the come-from-behind win. Tan Holdings trailed at the break, 0-2, as Jeff Castro and Matthew Holey nailed one goal apiece for Inter Godfather’s, scoring in the 19th and 26th minute, respectively.
Miller then began Tan Holding’s recovery with a goal right into the first minute of the second half. Two minutes later, Peter Loken answered back to make it a 3-1 lead for Inter Godfather’s before Miller continued carrying Tan Holdings on his shoulders and Xu stepped in to steal the victory. Miller scored his next two goals off penalty shots in the 53rd and 72nd minute.
KFAS 3, Matansa 1
In the third game last weekend, Korean Football Association on Saipan got goals from three different players to beat Matansa FC.
Sung Su Jung, Brian Lee, and Jun Woo Lee contributed one goal apiece for KFAS, which fell behind early, 0-1, after allowing Thomas Mandumpala to score in the seventh minute. Jung made it to the board in the 10th minute to even up the count, while Brian Lee and Jun Woo Lee notched their respective goals in the second half.
MP United 9, Kanoa 1
MP United played in the last game in Week 1 and also posted the biggest winning margin.
Jireh Yobech heated up MP United’s offense with back-to-back goals in the first half (8th and 18th minute), while Adam Hardwicke added one to make it a 3-0 lead at halftime.
John Joyner then opened the scoring for MP United in the second half with his goal in the 55th minute, while Yobech completed a hat-trick five minutes later. Now ahead at 5-0, MP United kept going with Dan Westphal contributing two goals (60th and 80th), and Jason Warren and Greg Sablan chipping in one apiece after scoring in the 72nd and 85th, respectively.
Kanoa avoided a shutout after getting a goal from Yoshi Mafnas in the 74th minute.
Shirley’s 3, Women’s National Team 0
In the second game in Division 2, Shirley’s FC gave the Women’s National Team a rude welcome to the M-League with a shutout victory last Thursday.
Jack Phan logged two goals for Shirley’s, while Louis Ryu Hoin registered the other goal for the winning squad. The Women’s National Team is playing in the M-League to prepare for future off-island competitions.
Sun Palace 3, Thundercats 3
In the other Division 2 match, Sun Palace and the Thundercats had a draw last Wednesday.
Guanglin Li scored all three goals for Sun Palace, while Makani Gramlich had two for the Thundercats, including the game-tying one in the second half. Yong Jeon recorded the other goal for the Thundercats. Li hit his first two goals in a span of two minutes (38th and 40th minute), while Jeon put the Thundecats in the board earlier with his goal in the 16th. The Thundercats stretched the advantage to 2-0 before Li came out strong late in the first half to force a standoff at halftime.
