Island Floral demolished Island Manpower, 85-62, in the second game in the 2nd DL Corp. Invitational Basketball League last Monday night at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.
A 25-7 scoring in the first quarter set up Island Floral’s lopsided victory and impressive debut in the 16-team field league. Island Floral got at least three field goals from four different players in the opening 19 minutes of the match to take the commanding 18-point lead.
Island Manpower was lost at the get-go with only Ivan Devero and Chris Esteves scoring in the first quarter and although the team picked up its offense a bit in the second period, still Island Floral more than doubled-up the former by halftime. Island Floral led by 33 big points at the break, 52-19, as it continued to draw points from every player it field in the game.
In the end, four Island Floral players finished in twin digits in the team’s debut win. Jun Tabora scored 18 points, Alex Standish added 16, and John Santos and Cesar Bisana chipped in 14 and 13, respectively. Devero was the lone workhorse for Island Manpower, sizzling for 30 points.
With the rout, Island Floral joined the Bandits in the winner’s column in Pool B, which also has I Love Saipan (0-1) and San Antonio, C&J Cherries, Maplas, and Natural Mystic, which have yet to play their first game in the second season of the league.
Docomo 60, Saipan Ice 52
In Pool A, Docomo rallied past Saipan Ice to also win its debut.
Docomo trailed at the break, but held Saipan Ice to 20 points in the entire second half to eke out the 8-point win.
Still down by a hair at the end of the third canto, 40-41, Juan Camacho provided the needed baskets for Docomo, nailing 8 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter. His teammates also stepped up, as Rolly Paraiso, Jimmy Tudela, and three others combined for the remaining 12 points of Docomo in the final canto.
Saipan Ice made only 11 points after a lackluster third quarter where it logged only 9 markers to lose a twin-digit advantage, 32-22. Treat Kaipat and Derrick Rangamar scored in streaks for Saipan Ice in the first half to take the double-digit lead, but both struggled in the second half, while Docomo had an even point distribution to recover in the final half.
