Saipan International School and Grace Christian Academy were undefeated in the opening week of the 2013-2014 MISO Boys Volleyball League.
The Geckos and Eagles earned similar 3-0 records after matches were played last Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium. Joining SIS and GCA in the team standings are MHS (3-1), Saipan Southern High School (2-2), Mt. Carmel School (1-2), Marianas Baptists Academy (0-3), and Kagman High School (0-3).
The defending champions Geckos kicked off the season with a 2-1 win over the MBA Stormz last Monday. SIS took the first set of the opening match on the south court, 25-12, before MBA recovered in the second, 24-16. SIS went on to foil MBA’s upset bid with a 15-6 victory in the deciding third set.
Over at the north court, GCA also nailed a 2-1 triumph over Southern. The Eagles cruised to the 10-point win in the first set, 25-15, lost the second, 16-25, but saved the win with a 15-5 victory in the third set.
GCA had back-to-back games in the opening day and this time swept Kagman on the south court, 25-12, 25-17, 15-9. In the other second match set in Day 1, MHS got a free win after a no-show from Mt. Carmel on the north court.
The Dolphins then went 2-0 after blanking Southern in the first game last Wednesday on the north court, 25-11, 25-12, 15-3. On the south side, SIS also did not give up a single set against Mt. Carmel, notching a 25-11, 25-20, 15-10 victory.
The Knights bounced back in the second game on the north court, tripping MBA. Mt. Carmel dropped the first set, 13-25, but stole the win after sweeping the last two sets, 26-24, 15-11. On the south side, SIS kept its perfect slate after handing MHS its first loss. The Geckos secured the win after prevailing in the first two sets, 25-15, 25-14, before the Dolphins pulled off a 15-5 victory in the last set.
Meanwhile, after going 0-2 in the first two days of the league, Southern came out strong in last Friday’s matches. The Rays first defeated the Ayuyus, 23-15, 16-25, 15-8, and then notched back-to-back victories after slipping past MBA, 25-21, 11-25, 15-13.
In other results last Friday, GCA gained a share of the lead with SIS after downing Mt. Carmel. GCA earned the early victory after winning the first two sets, 25-17, 25-17, while the Knights avoided a shutout after nailing a 15-12 triumph in the third and last set. MHS also made it to the win column last Friday, following a sweep of Kagman, 25-14, 25-19, 15-13.
Action in the MISO volleyball league will continue today with SIS and GCA colliding for the solo lead at 4:30pm on the north court, and Kagman and Mt. Carmel dueling on the south side. In the second game at 5:30pm, it will be MHS versus MBA on the north court, and Mt. Carmel against Southern on the south side.
