Degree/UPAA claimed the solo lead in the 2013 UFO-Budweiser Masters Division Basketball League, following a 72-53 victory over Shakir Realty last Saturday at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium of the TSL Sports Complex.
A backbreaking 15-0 run in the first three minutes of the quarter helped Degree pull away and improve to a 2-0 record in the six-team field. Shakir absorbed its first loss after a win over Pacific Islands Club in the league opener late last month.
Before the early fourth quarter assault, Degree was only up by 5 at the end of the third canto, 45-40. Ferdie Tobias then started the fourth with a triple, followed by Alex Ocampo’s three straight field goals and Ariel Jinang’s back-to-back triples.
Shakir Realty sued for time as in an instant it faced a 20-point deficit, 40-60. When the game resumed at the 7:02 mark of the fourth quarter, Joselino Canoy finally broke the spell, which began in the closing minutes of the third canto. Shakir was only down by a deuce, 40-42, with 3:12 left in the third frame, when it failed to buy a bucket in the remaining minutes of that period, while Degree gained three free throws for more cushion.
Degree went on to throw the killer punches in the fourth canto with its successive baskets and Shakir misfired on its counter attack, giving the former the 19-point victory.
Jinang had a team-high 18 points in his debut this season, whole Ocampo added 17. Ernie Moises paced Shakir Realty with his 14 points.
Blue Haus 94, Laguna 77
In the first game, Blue Haus also cruised past Laguna.
Blue Haus went for the jugular right in the first quarter, taking a 25-10 lead and never lost the double-digit spread. Francis Rebuyon and Tony Diaz connived in Blue Haus’ strong start, scoring 8 points apiece. Diaz converted two triples, while Rebuyon scored 8 of the team’s last 12 markers in that canto to set up the lopsided win.
Rebuyon continued to cause trouble to Laguna, as he barreled his way to 10 more points in the second canto to keep the 15-point bubble at halftime, 47-32. He added 6 more markers in the third period, which belonged to Felix Palacios, who dropped 10 of his 12 points in that frame. Jun Tabora and Jun Alipio tried to keep up with Blue Haus’ gunners since falling behind in the first half, but they could only do so much and help from their teammates did not come. Blue Haus, on the other hand, drew contributions from several players in the fourth canto to preserve its big winning margin.
