The Division of Environmental Quality has red-flagged nine beaches on Saipan and is advising the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of these locations for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.
The affected beaches are Pau-Pau Beach, Aqua Resort Club, Tanapag Meeting Hall, Micro Beach, Hyatt Regency Saipan, Garapan Beach, CK District 2 drainage, CK District 4 Lally Beach, and San Antonio lift station.
Samples collected from these locations contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (enterococci) that exceed the CNMI Marine Water Quality Standards. These bacteria can indicate the presence of human and animal waste in the water.
The division analyzes samples of marine recreational and storm drainage water from 38 locations on Saipan’s coast every Tuesday. For more information, contact DEQ at 664-8500. (DEQ)
