Saipan International School won the battle of unbeaten teams in Week 2 of the 2013-2014 MISO Boys Volleyball League after outlasting Grace Christian Academy last Monday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The Geckos, who went 3-0 in the opening week, made it four in a row after a 2-1 victory over the Eagles. Week 1’s co-leaders were neck-and-neck in the opening set, as they tried to protect their clean slates, however, SIS held its ground and escaped with a 27-25 victory in the extended match. The second set was another tough game with the Geckos pulling off a 25-22 triumph to secure the early win and hand GCA its first loss this season. The Eagles managed to avoid a shutout when they took the third set, 15-13.
SIS also played last Wednesday and retained an immaculate mark (6-0) after beating Kagman High School and Saipan Southern High School. The Geckos survived a second-set scare against the Ayuyus to notch their fifth straight win. The Ayuyus eked out a 26-24 win in the second set after SIS nailed a 25-19 victory in the opening set. Then in the deciding third set, the Ayuyus gassed out, while the Geckos had a lot of reserves to cruise to a 15-2 win.
Against Southern, which SIS faced in the final game last Wednesday, the Geckos took the victory right after the second set. SIS faced a tough competition in the opening set before posting a 25-18 victory and then coasted to a 26-9 triumph in the second set to bag the outright win. Southern saved a win against SIS when it topped the third set, 15-7.
After losing the lead to SIS, GCA recovered and improved to a 5-1 record, following its victories over Marianas Baptist Academy and MHS last Wednesday. The Eagles swept MBA, 25-23, 25-16, 15-6, and then earned the automatic win over MHS after prevailing in the first two sets, 25-20, 25-14.
The Dolphins, who had a 3-1 record in Week 1, were winless in Week 2, as they bowed to the MBA Stormz, too, last Monday. MBA, which dropped all its three games in the opening week, barged into the win column after sweeping MHS. The Stormz recorded a 25-14 win in the first set and secured the upset with a nail-biting 28-26 victory in the second set. The third set was another down-to-the-wire game with MBA still winning, 15-14.
In other results, Mt. Carmel School and Southern split their games in Week 2. The Knights (2-4) booked their second win after sweeping Kagman last Monday, 25-23, 25-12, 15-9, but fail to bag back-to-back wins on the same day after bowing to Southern in the last game. The Manta Rays moved one set away from beating Mt. Carmel when they registered a 25-17 win in the opening set. The Knights equalized with a 25-12 win in the second set, but the Manta Rays emerged victorious in the end after logging a 15-7 triumph in the deciding third set.
