The Tan Holdings Open 2013 will start its badminton doubles competition tomorrow at the TSL Sports Complex.
The annual tournament will have four divisions with the mixed doubles event drawing the most participants with 17 pairs. The women’s doubles has 15 teams, while the men’s doubles lures 13, and the new division—mixed 40-and-above—draws 8 pairs.
Leading the list of teams battling for the mixed 40A crown are Saipan Badminton Club’s Joel Ortega and the Berks’ Blazers Marlene Peraja. Completing the roster for the mixed 40A event of the tournament that allows players from different clubs to team up are husband and wife Jojo and Merlie Savellano, Vic Regis and Anna Omori, Edwin Montoya and Anna Alvarez, Ariel Mariano and Elna Curate, Panapa Peteru and Cristy Villaflor, Roger Vales and So Young, and Piao and Merlie Tolentino.
Two 40A games will kick off action in the Tan Holdings Open tomorrow with Piao and Tolentino colliding against the pair of Ortega and Pereja at 6:45pm on Court 1 and Regis and Omori facing the Savellanos on Court 3.
On Court 2, it will be the tandem of Deether Edralin and Dianne Francisco versus the duo of Kevin Park and Patricia Abantao in the mixed C doubles. Five other teams are entered in the mixed C doubles: Young Sang and Rowena Sison, A.J. Ortega and Nicole Malasarte, Peteru and Lanie Santos, Ariel Jinang and Judy Mendieta, and Patrick Fernandez and Jhoanna Olivos.
In the mixed doubles A, Ferdie Arago and Lani Santos will take on Andreau Galvez and Curate on Court 3 at 7:30pm. Battling the mixed doubles A crown against the two pairs are Glenn Bluutjens and Alma Ortega, Sam Jones and Malou Malasarte, and Ezekiel Macario and Jen Savellano.
In the mixed doubles B, which will not start until Sunday, only four pairs will duke it out for the championship. The list includes siblings Jordan and Janelle Pangilinan, J.P. Nopia and Havika Farro, Chris Hilario and Windy Fernandez, and Vales and Shirley Kim.
In the men’s doubles B, two matches will be played in the opening day with Montoya and Alvin Alvarez meeting Edralin and Nopia on Court 2 at 9:5pm and Joel Ortega and Savellano squaring off against Piao and Jerry Tan at 9pm on Court 1. Others entered in the men’s doubles B are Jordan Pangilinan and Ezekiel Macario, and Hilario and Aries Cordero.
In the women’s doubles B, three games are set for Day 1 and all will take place at 8:15pm. Marlyn Montano and Loyda Ito will take on Ortega and Francisco on Court 1, Lucella Lampera and Cheng Saturno will battle Mykki Caracut and Farro on Court 2, and Toshiko Obata and Windy Fernandez will challenge Villaflor and Santos on Court 3.
In the women’s doubles, only one match is scheduled for tomorrow with Ito and Alvarez dueling Lani Bartolome and Obata. Malou Malasarte and Peraja and Omori and So Young are also competing in this division.
In the men’s doubles A, only three pairs are entered and games will not start until this Sunday. Bluutjens and Jones are still partnering for this event and will be up against the tandems of Galvez and Caranto and Macoi Aguda and Arago.
This year’s Tan Holdings Open will only be played for two weekends and will have a double-elimination format.
