Marianas High School and Mt. Carmel School proved to be too much for Kagman High School as the Lady Dolphins and Lady Knights clobbered the Lady Ayuyus in the varsity games in the 2013-2014 MISO Girls Basketball League last week at the MHS Gymnasium.
Mt. Carmel and Kagman met on Oct. 10 and the former coasted to a 65-13 victory after holding the Lady Ayuyus scoreless in the first and last quarter.
The Lady Knights built a commanding 24-0 lead after the opening period en route to their first win of the season. Mt. Carmel dropped its debut against the defending champions Dolphins, 43-54, despite leading the match most of the way.
Against Kagman, the Lady Knights made sure the Lady Ayuyus would not be able to recover, as Mt. Carmel dominated the match from start to finish. Karleen Reyes, Jan Travilla and Kaylani Lebria scored 6 points apiece in the first quarter for the early double digit lead.
After more than 10 minutes of going scoreless, the Lady Ayuyus finally made it to the board past the halfway mark of the second canto off Maria Angela Iriarte’s basket. Kagman went on to play its best offensive game in the second period, as it made 9 points. However, Mt. Carmel still outgunned its foe, 10-9, with Richelle Kautz drilling the team’s first 6 points in that frame for their 34-9 advantage. The lead ballooned to 40, 53-13, as Kagman was held to two field goals, while Mt. Carmel scattered 19 markers.
Then in the final canto, baskets fell to fall for the Lady Ayuyus, while the Lady Knights continued to get points from their starters to complete the demolition.
Kagman was also off in its 12-72 loss to the Dolphins on Oct. 11, as the former went scoreless in the first two periods. The defending champions showed no mercy against the hapless Kagman, pouring points in the first half for a huge 45-0 lead.
The Lady Ayuyus broke the long spell in the opening minutes of the third off Trina Lyn Santo’s split free throw, but still Kagman lost by a big margin, as its players were no match to the Lady Dolphins gunners.
Jeraldine Castillo paced MHS with her 19 points, while Negahr Rastguiy added 18. Kyla Ito and Mikayla Lopez also finished in twin digits with 11 and 10 markers, respectively.
Meanwhile, Marianas Baptist Academy and Saipan Southern High School kicked off this week’s action in the MISO caging with the Lady Rays whipping the Stormz in the junior varsity game yesterday, 52-6.
