Marianas High School needed extra five minutes to thwart the pesky Mt. Carmel School, 82-70, in the varsity game in the 2013-2014 MISO Girls Basketball League last Friday at the MHS Gymnasium.
The Lady Dolphins squandered a 12-point lead in the third quarter, allowing the Lady Knights to send the game in overtime before getting the breaks in the extension. The short-handed Mt. Carmel was held to 2 points in the last 2:36 of the overtime period as it played without top gunner Jan Travilla, who suffered from cramps after playing without relief.
Before Travilla left, MHS was only ahead by a deuce, 70-68. Dianne Pablo made it a 4-point cushion, 72-68, as she went for an uncontested layup off a pick and roll play with Travilla failing to slide down on defense as she dropped on the floor, grimacing in pain.
With Travilla gone, the Lady Knights were down to five players with four of them having no breather and fatigue finally took its toll on them, allowing the Lady Dolphins more easy baskets. Pablo feasted inside, notching 8 more points to lift MHS to the 12-point overtime win.
Michelle Kautz sent the game in overtime when she canned a basket in the last 7.7 seconds of the regulation. Earlier, Mt. Carmel took a 4-point lead, 62-58, for a big turnaround since falling behind, 32-44, in the first few minutes of the third period.
Two straight baskets from Jeraldine Castillo evened up the match, 62-all, with 1:43 left, and Mt. Carmel had several chances to regain the lead when it attempted at least five shots in the paint after regaining possession, but muffed all of them. Gabrielle Race finally collared the rebound for MHS and pushed the ball for a Dolphins’ fastbreak play, which was preempted by a Mt. Carmel foul.
At the resumption of the game, Castillo went for the inbound play from the baseline and caught the Lady Knights’ defense napping, as she made a pass to Pablo underneath for the go-ahead basket, 64-62, with 43 seconds left on the clock.
The next 30 seconds of the match then became a helter-skelter game, as teams traded errors with the Lady Dolphins committing the last one with Ito throwing an errant pass to Castillo and Reyes picking up the loose ball. Reyes then kicked off a pass to Travilla on the right corner and the latter pulled up for a triple. She made an airball, but fortunately, Michelle Kautz was at the right place at the right time for the putback and the equalizer.
With the clock down to seven seconds and both teams left without a time out, MHS rushed for the inbound play, but failed to attempt a decent shot, as Castillo threw up a prayer just a few steps past the midcourt with the ball just bouncing down the floor near the 15-foot line as time expired.
In overtime, Mt. Carmel scored first off Travilla’s drive before the Lady Knights gassed out against the much deeper bench of the Lady Dolphins.
