I Love Ladder Beach and AXE Proa still hold unblemished records, following their separate wins in the UFO-Budweiser Open Division Basketball League last Tuesday night at the Gillette Multipurpose Gymnasium.
Ladder Beach rolled to its fourth victory in as many games after rallying past KB Market in the curtain-raiser, 77-70, while Axe Proa outclassed the Hoopaholics in the second match, 59-51, to improve to a 3-0 card.
Falling behind by as much as 13 in the first half, 33-46, and still down by 9 at the end of the third, 53-62, Ladder Beach managed to steal the win in the fourth canto after holding KB Market to three field goals and 8 points. On offense, Ken McCain lifted Ladder Beach in the fourth quarter, as he drilled 11 of his 23 points in the payoff period.
Ladder Beach also leaned on its decent 3-point shooting in the fourth canto to turn the tables on KB Market, as the former connected three treys, including two from McCain. KB Market made only one shot from downtown, courtesy of Elmer Esdrelon, while Ivan Devero was the only other player to hit a field goal for his team in the final frame. KB Market collapsed, as it was held scoreless for more than three minutes midway in the fourth canto.
KB Market was off to a good start, as Leo Galarse converted two triples and scored 8 markers in the opening canto, while Brendon Talania added 6 to power their team to the 23-14 lead. Galarse and Talania continued their consistent showing on offense in the next two quarters and KB Market also drew points from Darwin Barbo to stay on top after the third canto.
In the fourth quarter meltdown, Barbo made only one free throw, while Talania fouled out and was scoreless, while Galarse also failed to buy a single basket in the pivotal period.
In the second game, Proa also won in the fourth quarter after engaging the Hoopaholics in a close battle in the first three cantos.
Lerio Pagarao secured the victory for Proa in the final frame, as he knocked in 9 of his 17 points in that quarter. Three of his teammates also contributed to Proa’s cause in the fourth, which began with Pagarao and company holding a risky 2-point lead, 41-39.
The Hoopaholics continued to breathe on Proa’s neck early in the fourth until Pagarao found his rhythm and nailed 6 straight markers past the halfway mark of that canto to give his team more cushion. Dan Barcinas then hit a triple, while Pagarao added 3 more consecutive markers, and Marvin Rabauliman made the final basket for the 8-point win.
The Hoopaholics struggled a bit on offense in the fourth, firing only 12 points and getting more than one field goal only from one player—Kelvin Fitial.
