Youth biker Erico Castro prevailed in a closely fought road bike race in last Sunday’s Pacific Islands Club Bike for Life.
Castro completed the 50-kilometer race in 1:54:59, nosing out fellow U18 biker Jerome Diyco, who made it to the finish line at the 1:55:01.06 mark. Diyco also faced a tough challenge from Butch Sublemente in the battle for second place, as the veteran biker timed in at 1:55:01.37.
Castro was awarded a medal, free entry to Hell of Marianas, and PIC Water Park passes for two for ruling the road bike division. Diyco also got a medal and a brunch certificate at Magelland and 2 water park passes, while Sublemente had water park passes, too, to go with his third place medal.
The Top 3 finishers along with the 30 others bikers started the race at the southern parking lot of PIC, passing through the Airport Road, Isa Drive, Kagman Road, and Talafofo before going back to San Antonio via Beach Road.
Eleven other bikers joined the road bike category with Willy Barbo and Edwin Tiwales rounding out the Top 5 after posting 1:55:01.40 and 1:57:46, respectively. Other finishers were Aldrin Sta. Ana (2:00.16), James Abuy (2:16:15), Gerald Rangamar (2:21:45), and Arman Salburo (2:29:09).
In the MTB division, there was also a down-to-the-wire finish between Nap Dizon and Dencio Bautista with the former winning after clocking in at 1:55:01.37 against the latter’s 1:55:01.68. Ricky Suba completed the Top 3 after tallying 1:59:24. Dizon and company took the same prizes given to the road bike Top 3 winners.
Six other MTB division participants finished the race. The list includes Ric Antonio (2:26:11), Red Remilloza (2:19:34), David Boyer (3:11:27), John Day Moreno (3:11:30), Bruce Lorazer (2:57:48), and Noel Ignacio (2:16:15).
In the women’s division (road bike), Athena Andrews completed the half century race in 2:11:03 to beat Zai Lijuan and Yurie Lorangz, who recorded 2:33:30 and 2:57:49, respectively. Andrews also won an entry to the Hell of Marianas, a medal, and two water park passes. The two other female riders received the same prizes awarded to the runners-up in the men’s race.
