The first two legs of the Northern Marianas Athletics’ 2013 All School Cross Country Series drew over 80 students.
The first leg on Oct. 12 was held at the Airport Field with the U8 age group luring the most participants with 14. Saipan Community School’s Hana Ojima led the finishers list after clocking in at 9:00 in the one-lap course that had runners rounding the field once (about 900 meters)
Maria Sablan placed second with her 9:30, followed by her SCS schoolmates Michelle Ryu (9:57), Chloe Seo (9:58), Katie Choi (10:04), Saniya Sunil (10:25), Madina Tang (11:26), and Casssidy Estrada (12:18). Four-year-old Phoenix Gross also joined the U18 race and timed in at 12:33, finishing ahead of Grace Kim (12:41) and Abbie Kim (13:49).
In the boys division, SCS’ Daniel Kang logged 8:52 to beat schoolmate Reef Camacho (8:51.50) and Josh Lunzaga (12:03).
In the second leg held in Susupe (about 700m), Estrada topped the girls U8 with her 8:08. Completing the finishers were San Antonio Elementary School’s Davierrin Blas (8:49), Oleai’s Kina Rangamar (9:07), Garapan’s Sarapina Terry (9:15) and SCS’ Aoi Braxton (9:22), Hilah Bacumi (9:25), and Tang (9:33).
Kang also joined the second leg and won anew after submitting 7:30. He prevailed over Oleai’s Bwilitomwar Rangamar (8:19) and schoolmates’ Drei Camacho (9:34) and Lunzaga (9:52).
In the U10 division, different winners emerged after two legs. SCS’ Riko Ojima and Hyun Lee won the first leg after recording 8:23 and 7:22, respectively. Ojima edged schoolmate Victoria Jade Torres (8:39), while Lee defeated eight other SCS runners.
In the second leg, SCS’ Sedrei Camacho clocked in at 7:04 to edge Torres (5:21) and Nathannette Blas (7:29). In the boys U12, SCS’ Paul Ham checked in at 7:02 to thwart Vincent Bacami (7:55), Moon Zeng (9:37), and Tommy Cayetano (9:44).
In the U14 age group (about 1,900m), three SCS took the top spot, while runner from Hopwood Junior High School completed the first place finisher list. Mimi Saano and Haruya Eda ruled the first leg after registering 8:05 and 6:50, respectively, while fellow SCS runner Desrei Camacho won the Susupe run with a time of 6:53. Hopwood’s Janroe Alcazor foiled an SCS sweep when he posted 6:27 and beat the Tsunamis’ Ravil Bacani (7:21), Maruf Mamon (7:51), and Sange Xie Nan (9:09).
Hopwood got two more first place finishes in the first two legs with Ness Siech winning the Susupe race (about 1,400m) in the boys U14 division after tallying 13:15. In the Airport Field leg, J.J. Jones haved the Hilitai its first win after prevailing in the boys division with his field-best time of 13:55. SCS’ Melani He reigned supreme against four Hopwood runners in the first leg of the girls U14 race after clocking in at 21:40.
In the U18 division, Marianas High School teammates Negahr Rastguiy, Gabrielle Race, Mikayla Lopez, and Alexa Vergara submitted identical times of 16:45, finishing ahead of fellow Lady Dolphins Lourdes Seman (20:38), Hercia Nekaifes (20:21), and Brianna Pangelinan (21:29). It was also an all-MHS show in the boys division with Simel Charfauros Jr. timing in at 14:42 to down five other Dolphins bet.
Seman was the lone MHS runner who joined the second leg and registered 15:38, while Edgem Bedania , also of MHS, debuted in the Susupe race and recorded 10:39 to top the six other runners. It was a 1-2-3 finish for MHS as Seiya Eda and Lewill Cristobal came in next with their 10:40 and 11:24, respectively.
Meanwhile, the third and final leg of the series will be held tomorrow at 6:30am at the American Memorial Park. Registration starts at 6am
