The United Filipino Organization’s fundraising campaign for victims of the Oct. 15 earthquake in the central Philippines has reached close to $5,000.
UFO president Annamae Adaza said the umbrella organization of Filipino groups on Saipan has collected $4,905.18 as of Oct. 26. The group held its last day of collection during yesterday’s 9:30am Mass at Kristo Rai Parish.
“The help of the community was overwhelming. Aside from doing the fund drive in the Sabalu Market, Mt. Carmel Cathedral, Tuesday and Thursday market, and during basketball games, we also sent out letters to companies and their employees are sharing as well and most of them have extended help to the fund drive,” said Adaza.
During the Thursday Street Market alone, UFO was able to collect $910.11. UFO hopes to make a final tally today.
“Since we started the fund drive last Oct. 20 UFO volunteers have worked almost 21 hours for the whole week. I just want to say thank you to all who extended their help to the UFO fund drive. Rest assured the money will go the victims of the earthquake,” she said.
Adaza said they would make public the final details of their fund drive by week’s end and take a photo of their check donation to Sagip Kapamilya of ABS-CBN.
ABS-CBN, meanwhile, reported that the death toll in the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that hit Bohol and other provinces in the Visayas last Oct. 15 has risen to 215.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 201 died in Bohol, the hardest-hit province, while 13 others were from Cebu and Siquijor.
