ABC7 Saipan will have the distinction of being the CNMI’s first local channel to offer live programming when it launches the service on Monday, Nov. 4.
Sorensen Media Group president Rex Sorensen said live programming on ABC7 Saipan means local viewers can now watch their favorite ABC programs on the same day as their family and friends in Guam and the U.S. mainland.
Sorensen Media Group is the owner of ABC7 Saipan.
Currently all network broadcast and most cable channels aired on Saipan are delayed by one week.
“Live programming means that ABC7 Saipan will be airing the full 24-7 program offering of the ABC network as well as Sorensen Media Group’s produced content,” said Sorensen.
Some of the programs that will now be broadcast on same day as in Guam include Nightly News from the Pacific News Center, Good Question, and The Week in Review.
ABC7’s Network entertainment programming includes such popular shows as Dancing with the Stars, Scandal, Revenge, Castle, Marvel’s Agents of Shield, Once Upon a Time, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and the Academy Awards. The list of network sports programming consist of College Football, NBA basketball, and NASCAR racing.
“Technically, we receive the daily programming directly from New York as it is being aired there. The non-live programming is recorded and played in Saipan and Guam in the programs’ normal time slots. That is, a programming airing at 8pm in New York will likewise air at 8pm on Saipan. Live events such as sports, the Academy Awards air in real time. For example, if a football game is being played at 1pm in Los Angeles, it will air at 6am in Saipan,” explained Sorensen.
He said his company always wanted to bring live television to Saipan since it first opened ABC7 Saipan in 2008.
“However, it was not technically feasible until recently. With the advent of new video compression techniques we are now able to reduce the size of the video stream to allow us to use IT&E interisland fiber circuit to carry the signal.”

ABC7 Saipan, along with its companion radio station Power 99FM, is managed on Saipan by Sorensen Media Group’s island manager Tina Palacios.
