WASHINGTON, D.C.—Delegate Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) met last week with Esther Kia’aina prior to her confirmation hearing to be the next Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas at the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs.
Kia’aina was nominated by President Obama on Sept. 11, 2013, to succeed former Assistant Secretary Tony Babauta. The Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee held a confirmation hearing on Kai’aina’s nomination on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013.
“I appreciated the opportunity to meet with Esther prior to her confirmation hearing before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee,” said Bordallo. “Esther has strong roots in Guam and she is well aware of the many issues facing our island and the other insular areas. I am confident that as the head of the Office of Insular Affairs, she will continue to support federal policies beneficial to the territories. I hope that the Senate will act swiftly on her nomination and confirm her as the next Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas. (PR)
