Guam lawmakers push affordable sea transportation between Guam, CNMI

HAGÅTÑA, Guam—Senators Tina Muna Barnes, Rory Respicio, and Speaker Won Pat recently introduced Resolution 279-32 that promotes an affordable alternative regional transportation between Guam and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands by means of a commuter and cargo vessel service.

Muna Barnes indicated that meetings between herself and Rota Mayor Melchor Mendiola, as well as discussion held last month during the Mariana Islands Legislatures Association inaugural session in Guam, pushed this idea to the forefront.

“The addition of a ferry or similar commuter vessel based sea route between the islands will be especially beneficial to the promotion of trade between Guam and the Island of Rota and expand the tourism market in both islands,” said Muna-Barnes.

Respicio, for his part, stressed the need for a cost-effective alternative to air cargo.

“The addition of a commuter and cargo vessel service will provide farmers from Guam and the CNMI to be able to provide produce to both markets at better, more affordable rates,” Respicio said.

Won Pat stated that this resolution is yet another step toward greater cooperation between Guam and the CNMI for our mutual benefit and moves us closer to “One Marianas.”
