Nursing Club invites public to free health fair on Sat.

A Northern Marianas College nursing student gives a free immunization shot to a participant during last year’s Health Fair. This Saturday’s Health Fair, which will be held from 8am to 3pm, will feature free immunizations, screenings for blood pressure and blood glucose levels, and more. (NMC) As part of its effort to increase awareness about healthy lifestyle habits and practices, the Northern Marianas College’s Nursing Club is inviting members in the community to the 5th Annual Health Fair on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, from 8am to 3pm at the Multi- Purpose Center in Susupe. Entrance to the fair is free.

The Health Fair is supported with the assistance from the CNMI Area Health Education Center, Bridge Capital LLC, Star Water Inc., and other NMC and community volunteers.

Health Fair activities will run from 8am until 3pm and will also feature a 5K Walk starting at 6am. The first 20 participants who finish the 5K Walk will also receive T-shirt prizes. Entrance to the Health Fair and the 5K Walk is free.

In addition to the exhibits and information booths, there will be presentations from organizations like NMC Cooperative Research Extension and Educational Services. Other activities include a CPR demonstration by the American Red Cross, a Boxersize class by Trench Tech, and a Zumba class by Gold’s Gym.

Those who attend the Health Fair can also take advantage of free health services including free flu immunizations, screenings for blood pressure and blood glucose levels, as well as free HIV and STD testing and counseling. Participants will also be able to purchase healthy drinks and snacks from Tropical Blendz, and try samples from Subway and Foremost.

There will also be an obstacle course designed specifically for young children from age 5 through 12. The obstacle course is aimed to help youth improve their athletic abilities while having fun with other participants.

Participants will also have a chance to win raffle prizes like free dental cleanings from Seventh Day Adventist Dental Clinic, Pacific Islands Club waterpark passes, gas vouchers at Shell from IP&E, and other prizes from other companies in the community. Funds raised will be donated to the NMC’s Nursing Club to purchase lancets and other supplies used for community service projects.
