FOA presents Broadway musical ‘Rent’

The Friends of the Arts is pleased to announce its upcoming production of Rent, the rock musical, with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson. The play is based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera La Bohème. The award winning musical tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York City’s Lower East Side, living the bohemian life in the early days of HIV/AIDS.

Performed both off- and on-Broadway, the show won a Pulitzer Prize and, later, a Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production closed on Sept. 7, 2008, after a 12-year run of 5,123 performances, the ninth longest-running Broadway show at the time.

The FOA performance, under the direction of Leo Goode and the music direction of Paul Dujua, and with a talented local cast, will bring to Saipan the bohemian lifestyle of New York and the fear and acceptance of HIV/AIDS.

Rent will have three performances: Feb. 28, March 1, and March 2, at PIC’s Charley’s Cabaret. All three shows will start at 7pm.

Ticket cost is $15 for a non-FOA adult, $12 for a FOA member adult and $8 for students, to include college students and children over age 4.

Tickets can be purchased from Frank Gibson at 287-7476 or flgibson@yahoo.com, or from Susan Fishman-Tudor and 287-7476 or susanftudor@mac.com. (FOA)
