Saipan fighters “Kill Bill” Saures and Kelvin Fitial wowed the crowd and the judges enough and earned slots to fight in a Pacific Xtreme Combat event on Guam in the near future.
This according to PXC Prebao Hao official Cesar Whit of Graccie Barra, who stressed during an interview yesterday that the efforts and performances by Saures and Fitial were phenomenal and that both deserved to fight on Guam.
“That was pretty much the judges' pick and the crowd's pick as well,” Whit said. “Those two really did well.”
Whit explained that despite Saures losing to PXC champion Manny “The Enforcer” Chong in the main event, he still earned his slot after putting up a good fight and taking Chong to the limit.
“It was best in show, and the best in show doesn't necessary mean the winner,” Whit said. “I think we owe Bill that much. He put on a very good show.”
Whit also disclosed that another fighter would accompany Saures and Fitial. However, the fighter's name will be disclosed at a later date.
Despite giving up 25 lbs to Chong, Saures put up a strong fight and even cut Chong above his left eye. Saures battled until the third round, and lost after Chong mounted and placed his forearm on Saures' throat, forcing Saures to tap out.
During an interview with Chong after the fight, the champion stressed that he believes Saures deserves a shot at going to Guam.
“I think he should go to Guam,” Chong said. “He fought a good fight and deserves to.”
Chong also explained that he expected his bout with Saures to be a tough one.
“I expected him to be tough. I heard he's undefeated, and you don't fight undefeated unless you're tough, so coming here, I expected a tough fight.”
As reported earlier, Saures was happy with his performance.
“I'm happy with it,” he said. “I didn't win, but since when have you seen someone fight [Chong] like that? I know I fought him good. The last time he came, he won easily.”
The 35-year-old Saures prepped for the fight working with Whitt and the Graccie Barra school for eight months on jui jitsu and judo. He then spent three intense weeks working with Peter Guerrero's Dragon Tribe to sharpen his stand up fighting skills.
Meanwhile, Fitial was giving up 89 lbs. when he fought Chico Mesa of Guam, but the Saipan fighter played smart and prevented the fight from going to the ground. The two went to the mat just once, but only with Mesa falling from a strong Fitial strike.
Fitial was also able to cut Mesa, causing the Guamanian to bleed above his left eye. Fitial won via unanimous decision.
“I knew him and I knew he's a stand up fighter,” Fitial said shortly after his victory. “[But] we're fighting in front of the home and there's no way I'm going to let some one come in and win here. I just wanted to win.”
