Nickelodeon's well-loved cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants drew an amazing number of kids from the CNMI during a one-night concert at the Saipan World Resort in Susupe.
Over 5,000 kids, including their parents, swamped the hotel venue, forcing concert organizer MCV Cable Cares to divide the show into two batches Tuesday night. The concert was by invitation only.
The young crowd gave no doubt as to who their favorite Nickelodeon stars are, screaming themselves hoarse when Spongebob, Dora the Explorer, Boots, and Patrick Star showed up on stage. Some lucky children even went up onstage for some short games with the cartoon characters. Each show lasted almost an hour.
Yesterday morning, Spongebob and friends visited the Commonwealth Health Center to bring cheer to sick children before going back to Guam.
This visit also marked a memorable event when the Nicktoons met with two young brothers with muscular dystrophy Tuesday morning, also at the Saipan World Resort.
Marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg created Spongebob Squarepants. It was produced through Hillenburg's production company, United Plankton Pictures Inc. The series is set in the Pacific Ocean, in the city of Bikini Bottom and the surrounding lagoon floor.
According to Wikipedia records, the pilot episode first aired in the United States on Nickelodeon after the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards on May 1, 1999. The “official” series premiere followed on July 17, 1999 with the second episode, “Bubblestand/Ripped Pants.”
