Regional journalists form Micronesian media group

See full caption embedded on story Senior regional journalists yesterday formed the Micronesian Media Association to promote professional development, facilitate the exchange of regional news and provide mutual support to members.

The group of 12 media executives, meeting at the Aquarius Beach Hotel on Saipan, formed the organization to promote a free and independent Micronesian news media to ensure wide public access to information. The two-day meeting was held with sponsorship from the Sasakawa Pacific Island Nations Fund in Japan.

The Micronesian Media Association includes the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Guam, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Kiribati and Nauru. Membership will include regional newspapers, television stations, radio stations, magazines, and regional Web sites.

The group selected an interim secretariat and executives. Pacific Magazine publisher Floyd K. Takeuchi was chosen interim chairman. Francis X. Hezel, SJ, director of the Micronesian Seminar, was elected interim vice chairman. Frank S. Rosario, Pacific Magazine’s Saipan correspondent, was selected interim executive director.

The secretariat agreed to have the Micronesian Media Association affiliated with the Micronesian Seminar, which is based in Kolonia, Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia.

The interim secretariat will develop bylaws, membership categories and programming, including regional news media awards. The interim secretariat’s tentative plans include a follow-up meeting in 2008, including news organizations from across the Micronesian region.

Reklai, co-publisher, Island Times; Giff Johnson, editor, Marshall Islands Journal; Laila Boyer, general manager, Marianas Variety; Abed Younis, publisher, Marianas Variety; Jayvee L.
