3rd armed robbery in 5 days

Three men staged an armed robbery at a store in As Lito Saturday night. It was the third robbery to happen on Saipan in just five days.

The suspects fled aboard a car after getting an undetermined amount of money from Kang-Da Market, the Department of Public Safety said yesterday.

DPS spokesperson Lei Ogumoro said police received the report about an armed robbery in As Lito Saturday at 6:02pm.

Ogumoro said preliminary investigation showed that two suspects entered Kang-Da Market and one who was armed with a possible Taser gun demanded money.

The second suspect went behind the cashier's counter, broke the register using a hammer, and took the money.

According to the male cashier, the suspect attempted to assault him with the hammer but the victim managed to block himself with a basket.

The two robbers then fled aboard a possibly gold-colored Toyota Corolla or Camry. The getaway vehicle was driven by a third suspect.

The two suspects who entered the store were described as medium built and about 5'0” tall. Both were clad in army/camouflage clothing with masks to conceal their faces.

“This case is currently under investigation,” Ogumoro said.

The NMI Crime Stoppers Program is offering up to $1,000 cash to anyone who can provide any information leading to an arrest.

Last Friday afternoon, two men robbed two tourists at the Suicide Cliff in Marpi. The victims, both Koreans, were not injured, but their two wallets containing a total of $1,000 cash and other items were stolen.

One suspect was masked. The second suspect remained in the car.

The description of the suspects' getaway car were similar to the one used by suspects in the As Lito robbery.

The weapon used in the Suicide Cliff robbery was also possibly a Taser gun-similar to the As Lito incident.

Last Tuesday, a cashier was injured during an armed robbery staged by three unidentified male persons at S Mart in Gualo Rai.

In late October and early November 2007, six robbery cases occurred on Saipan.
