Kaipat removes Hirshbein as Labor director

Barry Hirshbein went back to work on Monday, not as the Labor director but in his previous capacity as Labor administrative hearing officer.

“This job always was and will always be very challenging,” Hirshbein told Saipan Tribune yesterday.

Hirsbein said he was on a 10-day vacation leave when he received a memorandum from acting Labor Secretary Cinta Kaipat that he is no longer the Labor director.

He refused to comment further.

Hirshbein, a former prosecutor, served as Labor director for one year and six months.

Kaipat appointed Glenda Reyes of the Labor Processing Section as acting Labor director. Glenda Reyes is the sister of Senate President Pete Reyes.

Saipan Tribune tried yesterday afternoon to obtain comments from Kaipat for the reason behind Hirshbein's replacement, but a staff said Kaipat was in a meeting and that the acting Secretary will respond through e-mail.

As of press time, Kaipat has yet to respond to Saipan Tribune's two e-mails.

It was Labor Secretary Gil M. San Nicolas who appointed then Labor hearing administrator Hirshbein to the Labor director position in December 2007.
