Historic preservation focus of Rota meeting

Historic preservation officers from eight Pacific island nations started their five-day consultation meetings with the U.S. National Parks Service yesterday on Rota.

The meetings are being held simultaneously with the CNMI's hosting of the 30th Annual Micronesian Endowment for Historic Preservation that is ongoing from July 7 to 11 at the Rota Hotel.

Representatives from Guam, American Samoa, Palau, Yap, Kosrae, Chuuk, Majuro and the CNMI are reporting on current developments and various issues each jurisdiction face in the area of historic preservation.

The chief of the Cultural Resources Team of the National Parks Service, Hank Florence, and the manager for the Micronesia and Polynesia programs, Paula Falk-Creech, are spearheading the consultation meetings.

Most of the federal funding for the HPOs comes from NPS, which is under the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Juan Diego Camacho, compliance specialist for the CNMI's HPO, said about 50 participants are joining the meetings, including representatives from the Public School System and staff from the Rota Mayor's Office.

Just last week, staff from the CNMI-HPO-Merti Kani, Ronnie Rogers, Lufo Babauta and Roke Magofna-attended the first Pacific Archeology Conference hosted by Palau.

The Marianas Archeological Research Center in Guam funded the trip of two other officers from the CNMI, John Castro and Herman Tudela.
