Gov. Benigno R. Fitial has approved the qualifying certificate of the island's first call center business for its $3.2 million expansion plan.
Under the Investment Act of 2000, the CNMI government through the Commonwealth Development Authority can provide companies up to 100 percent tax benefits to encourage new businesses.
PTI Services Inc. was allowed to get a rebate of the business gross revenue tax paid to the government for 20 years, which is equal to 5 percent of total wages and salaries paid.
The governor also approved a 100 percent abatement of excise taxes for three years as well as maximum abatement of the developer infrastructure tax.
The approved certificate indicates that, if at any time during the rebate and abatement periods, the total combined benefits received by the company exceeds $3.2 million, the privilege will automatically cease.
Besides compliance with local and federal rules, the company is also mandated to employ 20 percent of local residents in its workforce and must maintain the spirit of a community-conscious and civic-minded corporate citizen of the CNMI.
Part of the QC conditions is also the donation of $25,000 for the establishment of a scholarship program for public and private high school students.
PTI Services Inc. filed its QC application in March.
The company intends to spend about $3.2 million to expand and operate its center in Susupe.
Currently, the call center firm has 40 seats. The expansion will increase this to 300 seats, translating to more jobs.
