Bayani starts new win run, NMBA ends skid

NMBA-Ebisuya's Francis Rebuyon goes for a left-handed hook shot against MIFICPA Bowlers' Darwin Gonzales during their game in the masters division of the UFO caging last Tuesday night at the JP Center Basketball Court. (Roselyn B. Monroyo) Bayani began a new streak, while Northern Marianas Bartenders Association returned to its winning ways in the masters division of the 7th United Filipino Organization Inter-Organizational Basketball League.

A 96-87 triumph over MDX-Armatech last Tuesday night at the JP Center Basketball Court gave Bayani back-to-back wins. Bayani started the league with a 2-0 record, but had its winning run ended by Boholanos-Raffy's Diner two weeks ago.

The deadly duo of Jun Tabora and Ronald Delos Reyes, who combined for 60 points in Bayani-Shirley's' 83-77 win over Cabalen last week, was at it again against MDX.

Tabora fired 39 points, making a fitting follow-up on his 32-point explosion against Cabalen last Thursday. Delos Reyes, who logged 28 points against Cabalen, this time chipped in 29.

Tabora's drilled 21 of his points in the payoff period, bringing order back to Bayani's offense. After leading by 13 at halftime, 50-37, Bayani struggled in the third period, as only Tabora made more than a field goal in that canto.

MDX capitalized on Bayani's sluggish offense, as Dindo Pablo, Bernard Montano, and Nelson Samson started finding their marks. The trio combined for 18 of the team's 26 points in the third and MDX tied the game, 63-all, entering the payoff period.

However, MDX muffed its chances to steal the win, as it failed to neutralize Tabora, who made eight field goals in the fourth and was perfect from the foul line, going 5-for-5. Delos Reyes added seven markers in the fourth to preserve the victory and start Bayani's new winning streak.

In the curtain raiser, NMBA-Ebisuya snapped its two-game skid after beating MIFICPA Bowlers, 71-60.

A 21-11 third quarter run allowed NMBA to breakaway and improve its record to 2-2. The Ebisuya-backed squad won its debut over MDX, but dropped two straight games before bouncing back against MIFICPA.

The Bowlers, who were hoping to enter the win column, kept NMBA at bay in the first half, but ran out of offensive options in the third quarter en route to a 0-2 record in the seven-team league.

MIFICPA was behind by only three at halftime, 29-32, but none of its players scored more than two points in the third quarter, helping NMBA increase its lead to 14 points, 53-39, going into the fourth period.

NMBA hung in there with Francis Rebuyon, drilling nine of his team-high 17 points in the final quarter.
