Anti-smoking law major accomplishment of Youth Congress

One of the major accomplishments of the 11th Youth Congress is the recent enactment of the anti-smoking law in the Commonwealth, according to Speaker Alana May Leon Guerrero.

The measure was adopted by the Youth Congress and was recognized by the House members and eventually was crafted into legislation.

During Leon Guerrero's term, Saipan Tribune learned that a total of 17 resolutions and four bills were passed by members.

Their bills and resolutions serve as strong suggestion for the island's lawmakers.

Leon Guerrero was among the seven recently reelected in the recent poll. She is excited to begin work again for her fourth term in office.

“As the speaker to the 11th CNMI Youth Congress, I can honestly say that we've done our best to tackle the many issues we face today. Our challenge isn't over and I'm ready to work for the betterment of our youth community,” she said.

She disclosed that in her freshmen year, she introduced a law to enforce the curfew law, which was passed in the 15th Legislature.

In her second year in office, Leon Guerrero said the Youth Congress first introduced the idea for outlawing smoking in public places and government buildings.

“I thank the 16th Legislature for passing the bill,” she said.

Among the other bills passed during the 11th Youth Congress included the prohibition of the use of hand-held mobile devices while operating a vehicle; strengthen the penalties for minors consuming alcoholic beverages and establishments that sell the products to minors; and mandating the Department of Public Safety to remove dead animals from the public highways and roads.

This coming term, Leon Guerrero said the Youth Congress plans to focus on education, enforcement of laws, and implement programs for the youth.

She looked forward in working with six other colleagues who were reelected into office: Bianca Blanco, Annie Camacho, Sunny Frank Aldan, Seong Bin Lee, Adeleyah Mojica, and Jessamin Santos.
